Psychiatric diagnosis may be enhanced by tracking patterns of smartphone use—without monitoring what people see or type. A smart ring can help a woman conceive, by predicting her menstrual cycle. It can also detect pregnancy less than a week after conception (many women continue to drink or smoke for weeks before they realise they are pregnant).

　　第三句：Sensors will reveal if an older person’s balance is starting to weaken.

　　1. if表示是否，相当于whether，whether ... or not。

　　2. an older person指"老年人"。注意an在这里不是"一个"的意思，表示泛指。经济学人精读：老龄化会拖慢经济增长？| 外刊双语这篇中就提到了很多"老年人"的表达，一起来复习一下：

　　As the number of elderly people increases, governments may neglect growth-boosting public investment in education and infrastructure in favour of spending on pensions and health care.

　　The medicines you are currently taking could be affecting your balance.

　　第四句：People’s gait and arm-swing change in early-stage Parkinson’s.

　　1. gait：美/ɡeɪt/ 名词，指"步态，步法"，英文解释是way of walking。如：He walked with a rolling gait. 他走起路来摇摇摆摆。

　　track也可以作名词，表示轨道，路线，方向，固定表达on track意思是"在正确的道路上/正确的方向/正轨，正常推进"。比如经济学人上的这个例子"使……正常推进/步入正轨"英文就可以说keep ... on track：

　　Digitisation allowed Pfizer to keep all of its trials on track in 2020.

　　得益于数字化手段，辉瑞的所有试验在2020年均保持正常推进。

　　3. type：在这里是动词，意思是"打字"。比如别人问你打字有多快，英文就可以说How fast can you type?

　　固定搭配be pregnant with意思是"充满，包含，充溢着"，例如：

　　英文可以说：

　　Her silences were pregnant with criticism.

　　6. 一词多义：conception美[kənˈsepʃn]，这里的意思是"受孕，怀孕"。和pregnancy是同义词。

　　conception还可以表示"设想，构想"，比如"计划构思绝妙"，可以说The plan was brilliant/admirable in its conception，其中its也可以不加。

　　conception还可以表示概念、看法、意识，同义词是concept，这个很常见，如：团队意识可以说conception of teamwork。
